Im Alter von 17 Jahren hätte der Niederösterreicher beinahe sein Leben verloren. Bei einem Kopfsprung aus einem Meter Höhe brach sich der 27-Jährige die Halswirbelsäule, wurde von seinen Cousins gerettet. Diagnose: Querschnittlähmung. Entgegen der Prognose der Ärzt:innen, die dem jugendlichen Andreas nach der Operation mitteilten, dass er seine Arme und Beine nie mehr spüren wird, kämpfte sich Ernhofer zurück.
Nach drei Staatsmeistertiteln im Rollstuhlrugby kam der passionierte Feuerwehrmann durch die ehemalige Weltmeisterin Sabine Weber-Treiber erstmals mit dem Para-Schwimmsport in Kontakt und wechselte nach erfolgreicher Matura die Sportart.
Von der Südstadt aus eroberte Ernhofer seither die Schwimm-Welt im Sturm, qualifizierte sich für die Paralympics TOKYO 2021, gewann zwei Europameistertitel und ist Weltrekordhalter über 200 m Brust.
Das ganz große Ziel ist aber noch nicht geschafft: eine Paralympics-Medaille. Klappt es in Paris, würde ein sportlicher Traum in Erfüllung gehen. Aber auch das Fernziel ist schon definiert und formuliert: die Goldmedaille bei den Paralympics 2028 in Los Angeles.
