SINCE 1998

HOW IT ALL STARTED

The Austrian Paralympic Committee (ÖPC) was founded by the State Secretary Peter Wittmann and Secretary General Daniel Binter in 1998. On April 2 in 2009, the then Federal Minister Maria Rauch-Kallat became the President, Secretary-General is Petra Huber. The patron is Federal President Alexander van der Bellen.

The ÖPC was founded to enable qualified athletes to participate in the Paralympics and to provide them with the best possible support. In addition, President Maria Rauch-Kallat focuses on the promotion of young talent, especially children and adolescents with disabilities and on encouraging women to become top professional disabled athletes.

Many goals have already been achieved: since 2012, athletes with disabilities have been individually supported by Sporthilfe. In October 2016, the first five para-athletes signed their service contracts as army athletes, with 20 seats available. The Customs, the Federal Ministry of Public Service and Sport as well as the Bundessport GmbH are important factors for the development of the sport.
