Athletes want to be heard and the ÖPC wants to hear them. Hence, the Athletes Council was founded in 2016 with the aim understand the interests and needs of athletes better, as well as to ensure a smooth exchange of information between the athletes and the ÖPC.

Every member association or sport can send one member – an active athlete – as their representative to the Athletes Council. Every two years, a summer or winter athlete is alternately elected as chairman according to the respective Paralympics. The chairperson is also a voting member of the ÖPC board and represents the interests of the athletes. Both nationally and internationally, the Athletes Council or the Athletes Commission should concentrate on athlete-centred decision-making and respect for athletes’ rights. They should also create unity and good communication among the athletes and with the ÖPC.
